How to Clean a Hamster Sand Bath: Safe Sand, 20 cm Dish, Depth
Scoop wet clumps and droppings out of a hamster sand bath every day and replace the sand whenever it is soiled with urine or feces; wash the dish in warm water and dry it fully. The German veterinary welfare association TVT (April 2025) asks for round-grained, very fine sand (not sharp quartz, bird or building sand), a raised porcelain dish of at least 20 x 20 cm and access at all times. No authority gives a depth (one manufacturer says 2–3 cm), and hamsters should not get water baths.
