Disposable hand warmers feel harmless because they contain no battery, flame, or obvious liquid chemical. Their heat comes from chemistry.
Many single-use hand, foot, and body warmers contain iron powder. Once air reaches the pouch, oxygen reacts with the iron and converts it toward iron oxide while releasing heat. Animal Poisons Centre notes that these products commonly also contain smaller amounts of salt, water, activated carbon, and an absorbent material such as vermiculite.
For a dog that tears the packet open, the main poisoning concern is the iron.

Used vs. unused hand warmer: the distinction most owners miss
More elemental iron remains available to react and potentially be absorbed. ASPCA also warns that an unused warmer can continue generating heat after exposure and may contribute to thermal GI injury.
More iron has already been oxidized. Pet Poison Helpline notes that used warmers may cause mainly stomach upset, but current guidance still recommends calling after ingestion because “used” does not prove complete reaction.
The packet itself can obstruct the gastrointestinal tract. This mechanical risk remains even if the iron has already reacted.
Animal Poisons Centre specifically states that hand-warmer risk depends on the amount ingested, the animal's weight, and whether the warmer was already used. That makes “it was only one packet” an incomplete risk assessment.
A spent warmer can be chemically less dangerous than a fresh one and still be physically dangerous if the dog swallowed the pouch.
What is inside a disposable iron hand warmer?
Single-use heat packs commonly contain:
- iron powder — the principal toxicology concern
- salt — helps facilitate the oxidation reaction
- water
- activated carbon
- an absorbent material, often something such as vermiculite
The exact formulation varies. Do not use another brand's ingredient list to calculate your dog's exposure.
What to do in the next 10 minutes
Determine whether the pouch is intact, punctured, partly empty, or completely missing.
Was it still sealed? Had it just been activated? Had it already been warm for hours? Was it cold and discarded after use? Tell the veterinarian exactly what you know.
The brand, model, packet weight, and ingredient wording may help a poison expert estimate the likely iron exposure.
Iron toxicosis is evaluated by dose per kilogram of body weight. The same packet is far more concerning in a toy breed than in a large dog.
Whether a veterinarian induces vomiting depends on timing, dose, clinical signs, and aspiration risk. Do not improvise with peroxide, salt, mustard, or another home emetic.
What iron poisoning from a hand warmer can look like
MSD Veterinary Manual states that iron-toxicosis signs usually develop within about six hours. Vomiting and diarrhea—with or without blood—are typical early signs.
Depression, dehydration, low blood volume, shock, fever, and metabolic acidosis can follow severe GI injury.
An animal can appear to improve after early GI signs. That apparent recovery does not always mean the iron exposure is over.
MSD describes liver failure after substantial iron exposure, sometimes following the apparent-recovery period. Shock can also contribute to kidney injury.
⚠️ Bloody vomit or bloody diarrhea is an urgent warning sign. Both ASPCA and iron-toxicology references recognize severe GI injury with significant hand-warmer iron exposure.
Can an unused hand warmer actually burn the stomach?
ASPCA warns that if an unused disposable warmer is ingested, the oxidation reaction can continue and thermal burns may occur in the stomach, with bloody vomiting or diarrhea possible.
That is a distinct problem from systemic iron poisoning. A fresh warmer can theoretically create a dual hazard:
- chemical toxicity from elemental iron
- heat generated as the iron oxidizes
How much heat is generated inside a particular dog depends on the product, whether the packet was opened or chewed, oxygen exposure, and other factors. Do not use “it was hot” or “it was cold” as the only decision rule.
What if my dog swallowed the whole hand warmer?
Now there are two separate emergencies to think about.

Repeated vomiting, inability to keep food down, abdominal pain, reduced appetite, lethargy, or lack of stool later can be obstruction signs and deserve veterinary evaluation.
Why a small dog can be in trouble from the same packet a large dog survives
Iron risk is based on elemental iron dose relative to body weight. MSD Veterinary Manual states that ingestion above roughly 50 mg/kg elemental iron generally warrants veterinary decontamination and GI protection, while exposures above about 80 mg/kg warrant additional treatment and monitoring.
Those numbers are veterinary toxicology benchmarks, not a DIY hand-warmer calculator. The problem is that a household packet may not tell you exactly how many milligrams of elemental iron are available, and the degree of oxidation changes after use.
⚖️ Do not calculate risk from packet count alone. One fresh warmer in a 5-pound dog and one spent warmer in a 70-pound dog are not remotely equivalent exposures.
What the emergency vet may do
1. Estimate the elemental-iron exposure
The veterinarian or poison service will combine product information, whether the warmer was fresh or spent, the amount missing, and your dog's weight.
2. Decide whether veterinary decontamination is appropriate
If the exposure is recent and the dog is a safe candidate, the veterinary team may consider inducing vomiting. This is a clinic decision, not a reason to use a home-emesis recipe.
3. Check serum iron at the useful time
MSD states that serum iron can be measured around 4–6 hours after exposure. Timing matters because a test obtained too early may not capture peak absorption.
4. Monitor the GI tract, circulation, liver, and kidneys
Significant cases may need IV fluids, GI protectants, anti-nausea treatment, acid-base monitoring, liver/kidney testing, and inpatient observation.
5. Use iron chelation when indicated
MSD identifies deferoxamine as a specific iron chelator and notes that it is most effective within the first 24 hours, before iron has distributed extensively into tissues.
Why activated charcoal is not the default treatment for iron
Activated charcoal does not bind iron well. MSD states this directly.
That is important because generic online poison advice often treats charcoal as universal. It is not. The chemistry of the toxin determines whether charcoal is useful.
Iron poisoning is a good example of why “give charcoal for any poison” is bad toxicology.
Is a used hand warmer safe enough to ignore?
No. Used warmers can be lower risk because more elemental iron has already reacted with oxygen, but “used” is not a standardized endpoint. A warmer used for 20 minutes is not the same as one that completed its full reaction cycle.
