Fresh Dog Food: Formats, Costs and How to Compare Services
"Fresh" dog food now comes refrigerated from the grocery store, frozen by subscription, frozen at a retail counter and even in shelf-stable cartons. We sorted the formats, priced several services per 1,000 calories and lined up their storage rules so you can compare them on the same terms.
Refrigerated retail
Cooked, sold from store fridges. No subscription. Short open window.
Example: Freshpet
Frozen subscription
Cooked, frozen, shipped in portions sized for your dog. Needs freezer space.
Examples: The Farmer's Dog, Ollie, Nom Nom, Spot & Tango
Frozen, bought one-off
Fresh-frozen meals sold without a plan, online or in stores.
Examples: JustFoodForDogs, Open Farm, Nom Nom at retailers
Shelf-stable "fresh"
Cooked and sealed so it keeps in the pantry until opened.
Examples: JustFoodForDogs Pantry Fresh and JustFresh, The Farmer's Dog Instant Fresh
What counts as "fresh" dog food
There's no legal definition. We didn't find "fresh" defined on AAFCO's consumer label pages, and DogFoodAdvisor's guide to fresh food costs says the same: there's "no legal definition or any regulatory standards" for the term. In practice, companies use it for food that is cooked at lower temperatures than kibble, high in moisture, made with recognizable meat and vegetables, and sold without the preservatives dry food needs. PetMD's guide, written by Hannah Hart, DVM, and reviewed by Molly Price, DVM, describes fresh dog food as "minimally processed and made without preservatives," and notes that fresh foods "can be gently cooked, high-pressure processed, air-dried, dehydrated, or freeze-dried."
That last list shows how loose the word has become. This guide sticks to the cooked, high-moisture foods most people mean when they say fresh: refrigerated rolls and bags, frozen meal packs and the newer shelf-stable cartons and pouches. Raw food is a different category with different risks, covered in our raw feeding guide. Air-dried food is closer to jerky than to a fresh meal; we compare those brands in our guide to air-dried dog food brands. And if you're wondering what "gently cooked" or "minimally processed" really guarantee, our article on minimally processed dog food goes through each method.
Because fresh food has so much water, the label numbers look very different from kibble. A typical fresh recipe lists something like 8% protein and 75% or more moisture. Nom Nom's Beef Mash, for example, guarantees 8% protein, 5% fat and up to 77% moisture, with 201 kcal per cup. Comparing those percentages with a kibble's 25% protein tells you almost nothing. Calories and nutrients per 1,000 kcal are the fair comparison, and so is cost per 1,000 kcal.
The four formats in daily life
Refrigerated retail
Freshpet is the main example. Its food is cooked, packed in rolls and bags and sold from branded fridges, with no subscription. The catch is time: Freshpet's FAQ says rolls and most bags must be used within 7 days of opening, and some recipes within 5. That works well for medium and large dogs and can mean waste for small dogs with large packs. It's also the cheapest fresh-style option we priced, from about $5.27 per 1,000 kcal at one Kroger store. Our Freshpet review covers its recipes and the 7-day math.
Frozen subscription
The Farmer's Dog, Ollie, Nom Nom, Spot & Tango, PetPlate and Open Farm's meal plans all ship frozen food to your door on a schedule. Most build a plan around your dog's weight and activity and send pre-portioned packs. The upside is convenience and portion control. The downsides are freezer space, planning ahead to thaw, and the fact that many of these companies don't publish a price until you've entered your dog's details. Shipping is usually limited: Nom Nom and Spot & Tango say they ship to the 48 contiguous states, and The Farmer's Dog to the continental U.S.
Frozen, bought one-off
Some fresh brands also sell without a plan. JustFoodForDogs sells frozen meals online as one-time purchases and through what it calls "12 open kitchens you can visit." Nom Nom says its recipes are available "in-store or through Nom Nom's personalized subscription," and names Chewy, PetSmart and Amazon. Open Farm sells its frozen gently cooked recipes as one-time purchases or on Autoship. This route suits owners who want to try fresh food without committing, or who use it as a topper.
Shelf-stable "fresh"
This is the newest format. JustFoodForDogs' Pantry Fresh meals are cooked "at low heat, under pressure, inside their packaging," using Tetra Pak cartons, and the company says they keep for up to two years unopened. Its JustFresh pouches are another shelf-stable line, also listed at up to two years in the pantry. The Farmer's Dog's Instant Fresh is a dry product you mix with water. These options trade some of the "fresh" image for real convenience: no freezer, no thawing, easy travel. Once opened, they behave like fresh food again: JustFoodForDogs says to refrigerate Pantry Fresh and use it within 5 days, and JustFresh within 3.
A few brands also sell "fresh" dry foods, such as Spot & Tango's UnKibble, which it calls "Fresh Dry," PetPlate's oven-baked FreshBaked and Ollie's baked recipes. They're closer to kibble in how you store and serve them, and we've left them out of the price comparisons below.
Check adequacy before anything else
PetMD's guide puts it plainly: "Not all fresh dog foods provide complete and balanced nutrition." Before price or storage, check the AAFCO statement for the specific recipe. It tells you which life stages the food covers and how that was established. Here's what we could find:
| Brand and recipe | AAFCO statement or claim | Method | Who formulates, in the brand's words |
|---|---|---|---|
| JustFoodForDogs Turkey & Whole Wheat Macaroni (frozen) | Adult maintenance | Feeding trials using AAFCO procedures | "Formulated by veterinary nutritionists" |
| JustFoodForDogs Pantry Fresh Chicken & White Rice | All life stages, including growth of large-size dogs | Formulation | Same |
| JustFoodForDogs JustFresh Chicken | Adult maintenance | Formulation | Same |
| Nom Nom Beef Mash | All life stages, including growth of large-size dogs | Formulation | "board-certified veterinary nutritionists" |
| Spot & Tango Fresh recipes | All life stages | "by formulation and by analysis of the finished product" | "Veterinarians and animal nutritionists" |
| Open Farm Harvest Chicken (gently cooked) | Maintenance; listed for adult and senior dogs | Formulation | Not stated on the page we read |
| The Farmer's Dog | "Complete and balanced according to AAFCO standards"; most recipes all life stages | "Backed by AAFCO Feeding Trial" | "board-certified veterinary nutritionists" |
| Ollie | Not visible on the pages we could read | Not visible | "formulated with vet nutritionists" |
| PetPlate | "made with human-grade meats and veggies to AAFCO standards" | Not stated | Not stated |
| Freshpet | Varies by recipe; one line is supplemental only | Formulation on the recipes we read | Not stated on product pages |
From each brand's product, FAQ or veterinary pages, read October 29, 2026. JustFoodForDogs' Tofu & Quinoa recipe is labeled for intermittent or supplemental feeding only.
Two details are easy to miss. First, the same brand can use different methods for different recipes: JustFoodForDogs ran a feeding trial for its frozen Turkey & Whole Wheat Macaroni, while its Pantry Fresh carton uses formulation. Second, "all life stages" doesn't always include large-breed puppies. Look for the words "including growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult)" if your puppy will be big. Our wet puppy food guide explains why.
WSAVA's guide to selecting a pet food adds questions worth asking any fresh company: whether it employs a nutritionist, who formulates the diet, what quality control it uses and whether its research is published. It says appropriate qualifications are "either a PhD in Animal Nutrition or Board Certification by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition (ACVN) or the European College of Veterinary Comparative Nutrition (ECVCN)," and that "consultants may have limited influence compared to a staff Nutritionist." Note the wording differences in the table above: "board-certified veterinary nutritionists," "veterinary nutritionists," "vet nutritionists" and "veterinarians and animal nutritionists" don't all mean the same thing.
What fresh dog food costs per 1,000 calories
Prices are where fresh food comparisons usually fall apart. Some companies show a starting price per meal, some per day, some only after you enter your dog's details, and nearly all lead with a first-order discount. We used regular one-time prices where they were public, together with each recipe's printed calories, to get a cost per 1,000 kcal.
| Product | Format | Pack | Regular price | kcal in pack | Cost per 1,000 kcal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freshpet Tender Chicken roll (Kroger) | Refrigerated | 6 lb | $19.99 | 3,794 | $5.27 |
| Freshpet Fresh From the Kitchen (Kroger) | Refrigerated | 4.5 lb | $28.99 | 3,470 | $8.35 |
| JustFoodForDogs Turkey & Whole Wheat Macaroni | Frozen | 14 × 18 oz | $167.99 | 12,348 | $13.60 |
| JustFoodForDogs JustFresh Chicken | Shelf-stable pouch | 7 × 12 oz | $49.00 | about 2,986 | $16.41 |
| Open Farm Harvest Chicken, gently cooked | Frozen | 16 oz | $10.00 | 594 | $16.84 |
| JustFoodForDogs Pantry Fresh Chicken & White Rice | Shelf-stable carton | 6 × 12.5 oz | $44.99 | 2,325 | $19.35 |
| Purina Dog Chow Complete (kibble, for scale) | Dry | 44 lb | $29.99 | 69,235 | $0.43 |
Prices from each brand's site, or kroger.com for Freshpet and Dog Chow, October 29, 2026. JustFresh calories calculated from its stated 1,254 kcal/kg. Our arithmetic: price ÷ pack kcal × 1,000. First-order and subscription discounts not included.
Bar length is relative to the highest price shown. Green = frozen, red = shelf-stable, blue = refrigerated, gray = kibble.
For perspective, PetMD's guide says fresh food "typically costs about $1.40 per 100 calories," compared with about 25 cents for dry food and $1.10 for canned food. Its figures don't come with a source or date, but the JustFoodForDogs frozen price works out to $1.36 per 100 kcal, right in line.
What that means for a real dog
Using the 2021 AAHA guideline formula for a typical neutered adult (1.5 × resting energy), a 10-pound dog needs about 326 kcal a day, a 30-pound dog about 744 kcal and a 50-pound dog about 1,091 kcal.
| Dog | kcal/day | Freshpet roll | JFFD frozen | JustFresh | Open Farm | Pantry Fresh |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 lb | 326 | $1.72 | $4.44 | $5.36 | $5.49 | $6.32 |
| 30 lb | 744 | $3.92 | $10.12 | $12.21 | $12.52 | $14.40 |
| 50 lb | 1,091 | $5.75 | $14.85 | $17.91 | $18.37 | $21.12 |
Our calculation at regular prices. Subscription discounts would lower these figures; inactive dogs often need fewer calories.
Reading "per meal" and "per day" prices
Several services advertise a starting price instead of a pack price. On October 29, 2026:
- Ollie showed "Starting at $1.57 a meal" for its Full Fresh plan, which it says provides 100% of a dog's daily calories, and $1.00 a meal for a Half Fresh plan covering half. The same page carried a "50% off your first box" banner.
- Nom Nom listed price bands by dog size: "$1.60 - $2.60/Meal" for 5- to 25-pound dogs, "$2.61 - $3.60/Meal" for 26 to 45 pounds and "$3.61 - $4.60/Meal" above 45 pounds, plus a 50%-off trial.
- Spot & Tango said "Fresh meal plans start at $2/day."
- PetPlate showed its full plan "From $1.89/day," footnoted as the "Price after Intro Meal Plan discount applied."
- The Farmer's Dog showed no price on its public pages and offered 50% off the first box.
None of these can be turned into a per-calorie number without knowing how many calories a "meal" or "day" holds, and the pages don't say how many meals a day the prices assume. A low "starting at" figure usually belongs to the smallest dog. The fair comparison is to get a quote for your own dog, ask what daily calories the plan is built on, and divide. We walk through that step by step in our Freshpet vs. The Farmer's Dog worksheet.
Tufts' Cailin Heinze compared dog food costs in 2022 for a 55-pound dog eating 1,100 kcal a day. The fresh foods she surveyed, mostly bought by subscription, cost "4 – 6 times what the most expensive dry food cost," and daily costs across all types ranged "from 55 cents to nearly $20 for the same amount of calories." Her conclusion is worth keeping in mind as you look at the numbers above: "There is a good quality diet available at nearly every price point for a healthy pet."
Storage rules, side by side
Storage decides how much fresh food actually gets eaten. Here are the rules each company publishes, in their own words where we could read them.
| Brand | Freezer or shelf life | How to thaw | After thawing or opening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freshpet (refrigerated) | Unopened until the sell-by date, refrigerated | Not frozen at sale | 7 days for rolls and most bags; 5 days for two Homestyle recipes |
| Nom Nom | Freezer "for up to 6 months" | In the fridge overnight, or 24 to 48 hours | "up to 5 days" in the fridge once defrosted |
| Spot & Tango Fresh | Frozen "up to 6 months" | Overnight in the fridge, or a cold-water method | "up to four days" in the fridge |
| Open Farm gently cooked | Not stated on the page we read | "Store in freezer and thaw prior to use" | "up to 5 days" refrigerated in a sealed container |
| JustFoodForDogs frozen | "up to 18 months when frozen" | In the fridge (preferred) or cold water; cold-water-thawed food "should never be refrozen" | Use within 5 days of opening (3 days for fish recipes) |
| Ollie | Not visible on the pages we read | "in the fridge for at least 24 hours" | Not visible |
| JFFD Pantry Fresh | "Up to 2 years from the manufacture date" | None needed | Refrigerate, use within 5 days |
| JFFD JustFresh | Pantry "up to 2 years" | None needed | Reseal, refrigerate, use within 3 days |

The waste math
Pack size and the post-opening window together decide whether food gets thrown out. A JustFoodForDogs 18-oz frozen pack holds 882 kcal, so a 10-pound dog takes about 2.7 days to finish it, comfortably inside the 5-day rule. A Pantry Fresh carton holds about 388 kcal, a bit more than a day's food for that dog. A JustFresh pouch holds about 427 kcal, which a 10-pound dog finishes in about a day and a third, well inside its 3-day limit. Open Farm's 16-oz pouch holds 594 kcal, about two days of food.
Big dogs face a different problem: volume. A 50-pound dog eating about 1,091 kcal a day would go through roughly one and a quarter JustFoodForDogs frozen packs, nearly three Pantry Fresh cartons or about two Open Farm pouches every day. A 14-pack box of JustFoodForDogs frozen meals lasts that dog about 11 days and a 16-lb case of Open Farm about 9 days, so you'll need freezer room for that much food at a time. For small dogs, subscription plans are usually portioned to avoid waste; with refrigerated rolls, the 7-day window is the thing to plan around, as we showed in our Freshpet review.
Handling rules that apply to every fresh food
- Keep the fridge at 40°F or below. The AVMA and FDA both give that number for moist pet food.
- Thaw in the refrigerator. Several brands also allow a cold-water method, and Freshpet specifically says not to thaw on the counter or in the microwave.
- Don't leave fresh food in the bowl for long. Freshpet's guide says to discard uneaten food after an hour; the same habit makes sense for any fresh food.
- Wash bowls and scoops with hot, soapy water after each use, as the FDA recommends.
- Have a backup plan for travel and power outages, such as a shelf-stable option or a complete dry food your dog already tolerates.
What the research says about fresh food
Fresh food companies often cite digestibility studies. These studies are real and useful, but they're small, short and frequently funded or co-authored by the companies whose food is being tested. Here's what the main ones found.
Do et al., 2021
Funded by JustFoodForDogsTwelve adult beagles ate four diets in rotation: an extruded kibble, a Freshpet fresh diet and two JustFoodForDogs human-grade diets. Dry matter digestibility was 81.5% for the kibble, 87.1% for Freshpet and about 90.8% for the two JFFD diets. Fecal output was highest on kibble. The authors wrote that "more research is required to test for potential long-term health benefits."
Tanprasertsuk et al., 2021
Authors from Nom NomThis study compared commercial fresh diets with an extruded kibble and found lower digestibility for the kibble and about half the fecal dry matter on the fresh diets (24 vs. 47 grams a day). All authors listed affiliations with NomNomNow, Inc.
Geary et al., 2024
Co-author from Primal Pet FoodsThis study compared an extruded diet, a JustFoodForDogs fresh diet and frozen and freeze-dried raw diets. Fecal output was higher on the extruded diet than on the others, and protein digestibility was highest for the frozen and freeze-dried raw diets.
What they don't show
The gapNone of these studies measured long-term health outcomes such as lifespan, disease rates or weight over years. PetMD's guide says "evidence of long-term health advantages remains limited," and Tufts found "minimal scientific data to suggest a benefit" of one diet type over others.
Higher digestibility and smaller stools are real, measurable differences, and some owners care about them a lot. They're also partly a function of the ingredients and fiber in each recipe, not only of "freshness." A highly digestible kibble and a poorly formulated fresh diet could easily trade places. JustFoodForDogs' own research page claims its food is "up to 40% more digestible than kibble" and describes a 12-month university feeding study with 30 dogs; we couldn't find that study in a journal, so we treat those figures as company claims.
PetMD notes one more consideration: fresh foods are cooked at lower temperatures, which "may carry some risk of foodborne illness" for very young, old, pregnant or immunocompromised dogs. Cooked fresh food is still far from raw food in risk, but careful handling matters.
A checklist for comparing services
Once you've narrowed it down to two or three options, these questions separate them quickly. Most can be answered from a product page or a short email to customer service.
- Is the recipe complete and balanced for my dog's life stage, including large-breed growth if that applies?
- Was adequacy established by feeding trial or by formulation, and does the company employ a board-certified veterinary nutritionist or PhD animal nutritionist?
- How many calories are in each pack or cup, and how many calories per day is my dog's plan built on?
- What is the regular price after the first-box discount, and what does that work out to per 1,000 kcal?
- Do you ship to my area, and is there a minimum order for free shipping?
- How long does the food keep in the freezer, how long after thawing and how long after opening?
- Do I have the freezer space for one delivery, and the fridge space for a few days of thawing packs?
- How easy is it to pause, skip or cancel, and is there a refund for the first order?
- Is the company's research published in peer-reviewed journals, and who funded it?
The answers we could find for shipping and cancellation: Nom Nom offers free shipping on plans of $85 or more in the 48 contiguous states, says you can "Change or cancel your plan at any time," and offers a refund of the first order if you don't see benefits within 30 days. Spot & Tango ships to the 48 contiguous states, says you can "pause or cancel your subscription at any time" and offers a 14-day money-back trial. JustFoodForDogs offers free shipping on orders over $49, with a $19.99 flat fee below that. Open Farm's Autoship runs every 3, 4, 6 or 8 weeks. The Farmer's Dog says "Cancel anytime." Terms change, so check them at sign-up.
Who fresh food suits, and how to make it affordable
PetMD says vets "may recommend fresh dog food for conditions like food allergies, sensitive stomach, and low appetite or picky eating." In practice, fresh food tends to fit dogs that eat poorly on dry food, owners who value portioned packs and a meat-forward bowl, and households with the budget and freezer or fridge space. It's harder to justify for a large healthy dog already doing well on a complete dry food, given the cost. For dogs with digestive or medical issues, the food choice is best made with your vet; our guide to wet food for sensitive stomachs covers what vets usually look at first.
Many owners split the difference. Ollie's Half Fresh plan is built around exactly that idea, covering half of a dog's daily calories. You can do the same with any complete fresh food and a complete kibble. For a 30-pound dog, a quarter of the day's calories from the Freshpet roll and three quarters from Dog Chow costs about $1.22 a day at the Kroger prices we found. With a JustFoodForDogs frozen meal as the fresh part, the same split costs roughly $2.80 a day. The key is to replace calories, not add them. Our dog food toppers guide and budget-friendly dog food guide have more on mixing.
Fresh dog food FAQ
Is fresh dog food better than kibble?
It's often more digestible in short studies, many of them industry-funded. There isn't good evidence yet that it improves long-term health compared with a well-made complete kibble.
How much does fresh dog food cost per day?
At the regular prices we found, about $1.70 to $6.30 a day for a 10-pound dog and about $3.90 to $14.40 for a 30-pound dog, depending on the brand and format. First-order discounts lower the first box only.
How long does fresh dog food last?
Frozen packs keep for 6 months (Nom Nom, Spot & Tango) to 18 months (JustFoodForDogs). After thawing, most brands say 4 or 5 days in the fridge. Freshpet allows 7 days after opening, and shelf-stable cartons and pouches 3 to 5 days.
Is fresh dog food complete and balanced?
Most main recipes are, but not all, and life-stage coverage varies. Read the AAFCO statement on the specific recipe.
Can I buy fresh dog food in stores?
Yes. Freshpet is sold in store fridges, Nom Nom is available at Chewy, PetSmart and Amazon according to the company, and JustFoodForDogs sells through its own kitchens. Subscription-only brands ship to your door.
Is shelf-stable fresh food really fresh?
It's cooked and sealed so it keeps without refrigeration until opened. JustFoodForDogs says Pantry Fresh is cooked inside its packaging and lasts up to two years unopened. Whether you call that fresh is a matter of marketing; what matters is the AAFCO statement and the storage rules.
Is fresh dog food the same as raw?
No. The fresh foods in this guide are cooked. Raw diets carry different risks, which the FDA and AVMA describe in detail.
