Freshpet Dog Food Review: Labels, Cost and Practical Trade-Offs
Freshpet is the dog food in the glass-door fridge near the pet aisle. We read seven current recipe pages, the brand's storage rules and dated store prices to work out what you actually get, what it costs per calorie and where the clock that starts when you open a pack gets in the way.
Fridge note: Freshpet's own limits
From Freshpet's FAQ and feeding and storage guide. Unopened packs keep until the printed sell-by date.
The short version
- Freshpet is cooked, refrigerated food sold without added preservatives. It relies on staying cold, which is why an opened pack has to be used within 5 to 7 days.
- Most recipes are complete and balanced, but the life stage they cover changes from bag to bag, and the Healthy Mixers topper is not a meal.
- At one Kroger store, the cheapest Freshpet calories we found cost $5.27 per 1,000 kcal (6-lb Tender Chicken roll). A 44-lb bag of Purina Dog Chow Complete cost $0.43 per 1,000 kcal at the same store.
- Freshpet's own feeding charts start well below the usual calorie estimate for a neutered adult dog, so your real daily cost depends on which number your dog ends up needing.
- We found no published evidence that fresh-style food leads to better health than a well-made complete dry food. What you're paying for is format, palatability and the way it fits your routine, which can be good enough reasons.

What Freshpet sells in 2026
Freshpet's product site sorts its food into a handful of lines. The main one is simply called Freshpet. Older reviews and many Reddit threads call it "Freshpet Select," but that name no longer appears on the current site, so a review that describes "Select" packaging may be talking about a bag you can't buy anymore. Next to the main line sit Vital, Homestyle Creations, Fresh Treats and Deli Fresh, which the site lists as available at Costco. Freshpet Delivery is a separate direct-to-door service with its own product pages and prices.
The formats are slice-and-serve rolls and resealable bags. The bags hold shredded food, "roasted meals" or small bite-size pieces. We didn't find tubs on the current site. Small-dog and puppy recipes don't have their own line; they sit inside the Freshpet and Vital ranges, which makes the label on each package more useful than the line name on the front.
The company itself is not a small startup. Freshpet trades on Nasdaq (FRPT), reported $305.6 million in net sales for the second quarter of 2026 and says it owns two manufacturing sites, one in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and one in Ennis, Texas. It also says about 36,000 of its branded fridges now sit in stores across North America. That fridge network matters for you in a practical way: the food depends on the cold chain from the kitchen to your refrigerator, and the store fridge is one link in it.
Seven recipes, label by label
We picked seven products that cover the formats and lines most shoppers will see: the basic chicken roll, a Vital roll, the small-dog bites, the Fresh From the Kitchen bag, a puppy recipe, the Healthy Mixers topper and a Homestyle Creations bag. The numbers below are copied from each product page as printed on October 29, 2026. Freshpet updates recipes and packaging, so check the bag in front of you before you rely on any of it.

"Adult maintenance" and "all life stages" are different promises
The AAFCO statement is the most useful line on any dog food label, and Freshpet's vary more than most shoppers expect. The basic Tender Chicken roll and the Fresh From the Kitchen bag are for adult maintenance. That's fine for a grown dog and not designed for a growing puppy or a nursing mother. Vital's chicken roll and the puppy recipe cover growth, including puppies expected to reach 70 pounds or more. The small-dog bites cover all life stages but specifically exclude the growth of large-size dogs, which makes sense for a product sized for small mouths.
AAFCO's label guide describes two ways a company can back up that statement: formulating the recipe to meet the nutrient profiles, or running animal feeding tests. The wording we could read on the roll and Fresh From the Kitchen pages points to formulation. For Vital and the small bites, the snippet we could capture didn't show the method, so we can't tell you which route was used. If that detail matters to you, the full statement on the package will say it.
The one product here that isn't a meal
Healthy Mixers looks like the rest of the range and sits in the same fridge, but its label says it is "intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only." It's a topper. Fed on its own day after day, it isn't designed to cover a dog's full vitamin and mineral needs. Freshpet's own instructions for it are written as an add-on and tell you to reduce other food accordingly. If you pick up a Freshpet bag in a hurry, this is the line to read twice.
Puppies, especially big ones
If you're feeding a puppy, choose a recipe whose statement includes growth, and if your puppy will be 70 pounds or more as an adult, make sure it says "including growth of large size dogs." Large-breed puppies have tighter limits on calcium than other dogs, which is why AAFCO separates them out. Of the seven products above, Vital's roll and the Multi-Protein Puppy recipe carry that wording. The puppy recipe's feeding chart isn't on its web page; Freshpet points you to the back of the package. For more on how growth diets differ, see our guide to wet puppy food.
What the first ingredients tell you, and what they don't
Every recipe we checked lists an animal protein first, usually chicken. That reflects the weight of ingredients going into the recipe, and fresh meat is heavy because it's mostly water. It doesn't tell you how much of the final food's protein comes from that meat. Tufts' clinical nutrition team has argued for years that the ingredient list is one of the weaker tools for judging a food, and we lean the same way: the guaranteed analysis, calorie content and AAFCO statement say more.
One ingredient detail is worth knowing, though. The Tender Chicken roll lists peas fourth, Vital lists peas third, and the Homestyle Creations bites list pea protein fourth. In a June 2026 update, Tufts' Lisa Freeman wrote that diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy "appears to be associated with diets high in pulses (peas, lentils, chickpeas, beans)," in both grain-free and grain-inclusive foods. A pulse in the ingredient list is not proof of a problem, and nobody has published data tying Freshpet specifically to heart disease. Still, if your dog's breed has a history of DCM or your vet has raised it, the small-dog bites and Fresh From the Kitchen recipes had no pulses in their first six ingredients. Our grain-free dog food guide covers the research in more depth.
Protein and fat on a per-calorie basis
Freshpet's percentages look low at first glance. The Tender Chicken roll guarantees only 9.5% protein, while a typical dry food shows 21% or more. The difference is water. The roll can be up to 78% moisture, and dry kibble usually runs around 10 to 12%. Comparing as-fed percentages across formats is like comparing the sugar in a grape and a raisin.
The cleaner comparison is grams per 1,000 kcal, because a dog eats to meet its calorie needs, not to fill a certain weight of bowl. We divided each guaranteed minimum by the food's calorie density. Keep in mind that guarantees are minimums for protein and fat, so the real amount in the bag can be higher.
| Product | Protein min, as fed | Moisture max | Protein, g per 1,000 kcal | Fat, g per 1,000 kcal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tender Chicken roll | 9.5% | 78% | 68 | 50 |
| Vital chicken roll | 9.5% | 76% | 70 | 51 |
| Small Dog Bite Size Chicken | 16% | 63% | 82 | 62 |
| Fresh From the Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken | 15% | 69% | 88 | 65 |
| Multi-Protein Puppy | 16% | 58% | 78 | 49 |
| Homestyle Creations Grilled Chicken Bites | 19% | 70% | 136 | 29 |
| For reference: Purina Dog Chow Complete Adult Chicken (dry) | 21% | 12% | 61 | 29 |
Our calculation: guaranteed minimum × 10 ÷ kcal per kg × 1,000. AAFCO's adult minimum is 45 g protein per 1,000 kcal; the growth minimum is 56.3 g.
Every Freshpet recipe here clears AAFCO's protein minimum for adults with room to spare, and the puppy recipe clears the growth minimum. Per calorie, the roll's protein isn't far above a basic corn-based dry food. The bagged recipes are higher, and the Homestyle bites stand out because they pair a lot of protein with little fat and use tapioca starch for structure. If protein per calorie is the thing you're shopping for, our dog food protein guide walks through how to compare labels this way.
The fat column is the one we'd flag. Most of these recipes carry roughly 50 to 65 grams of fat per 1,000 kcal on their minimum guarantee alone, close to double what the reference dry food shows. Fat makes food taste good and supplies a lot of energy, which helps explain why many dogs gobble Freshpet. For a dog that has had pancreatitis or is on a fat-restricted plan from the vet, this is a reason to ask before switching. Our low-fat dog food guide explains how vets usually express fat limits.
How much a dog eats: Freshpet's chart vs. the usual estimate
Before you can price any food, you need a daily calorie number. This is where we found something we didn't expect. Freshpet's feeding chart for the Tender Chicken roll suggests ½ to 1 pound a day for a 21- to 40-pound dog. At 632 kcal per pound, that is 316 to 632 kcal. The 2021 AAHA nutrition guidelines estimate a dog's daily need by starting from resting energy (70 × body weight in kg0.75) and multiplying by a factor, usually 1.4 to 1.6 for a neutered adult and 1.0 to 1.2 for an inactive or weight-prone one. For a 30-pound neutered adult, that gives about 694 to 794 kcal, above the top of Freshpet's row.
| Dog | Tender Chicken roll chart row | Chart amount | Chart kcal | AAHA estimate, inactive (1.0–1.2 × RER) | AAHA estimate, neutered adult (1.4–1.6 × RER) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 lb | 5–10 lb | ¼–⅜ lb | 158–237 | 218–261 | 305–348 |
| 30 lb | 21–40 lb | ½–1 lb | 316–632 | 496–595 | 694–794 |
| 50 lb | 41–60 lb | 1–1⅜ lb | 632–869 | 727–873 | 1,018–1,164 |
Chart amounts from the Tender Chicken roll page. AAHA figures are our calculation from the 2021 guideline formula. RER = resting energy requirement.
Put simply, the roll's chart lines up with a quiet, indoor or weight-prone dog. AAHA itself notes that sedentary and indoor pets may need fewer calories, so the chart isn't wrong, just pitched at the low end. Freshpet's other charts don't all follow the same pattern: the small-dog bites chart rises faster for bigger dogs, so a 60-pound dog fed by that chart would get far more calories (about 1,470 kcal) than the same dog fed by the roll chart (632 to 869 kcal).
Neither number is a prescription. Start near the chart, weigh your dog every two weeks and look at body shape using a body condition chart such as WSAVA's. Gaining means trim the portion; losing or getting ribby means add. We'll price both ends below, because the gap matters: for a 30-pound dog, the middle of the chart row (about 470 kcal) and the AAHA mid-estimate (about 744 kcal) are more than 50% apart, and so is the food bill.
What Freshpet costs per day
Freshpet's own product pages don't show prices, so we used kroger.com, which displays store-specific pickup prices. These were the prices at one Kroger store on October 29, 2026. Your store, region and any sale will differ, and Walmart, Target and Chewy pages weren't available to us for comparison.
| Product | Size | Price | kcal in pack | Cost per 1,000 kcal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tender Chicken roll | 6 lb | $19.99 | 3,794 | $5.27 |
| Tender Chicken roll | 1 lb | $3.99 | 632 | $6.31 |
| Small Dog Bite Size Chicken | 2 lb | $13.99 | 1,765 | $7.92 |
| Small Dog Bite Size Chicken | 1 lb | $8.49 | 883 | $9.62 |
| Fresh From the Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken | 4.5 lb | $28.99 | 3,470 | $8.35 |
| Fresh From the Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken | 1.75 lb | $12.29 | 1,349 | $9.11 |
| Purina Dog Chow Complete Adult Chicken (dry, for scale) | 44 lb | $29.99 | 69,235 | $0.43 |
Prices: kroger.com, one store's pickup prices, October 29, 2026. Calories from each label's kcal/kg. Our arithmetic: price ÷ (pounds × 0.4536 × kcal/kg) × 1,000.
Kroger also listed several Freshpet items whose calorie content we didn't confirm, so we left them out of the per-calorie math. For the record: a 5.5-lb bag of Roasted Meals Tender Chicken was $26.99, a 1.5-lb Chunky Beef roll was $7.99 and its 6-lb size $20.49, a 1.5-lb Complete Nutrition chicken roll was $6.29, and a 3-lb Multi Protein Complete Meal was $19.99. Don't compare these on price per pound. Calories per pound ranged from about 632 to 883 across the products we could check, so a cheaper pound can still be more expensive per meal.
Daily cost at different calorie needs
Find your dog's daily calories in the left column, using the portion table above or a number from your vet, and read across.
| kcal per day | Tender roll, 6 lb | Small bites, 2 lb | Fresh From the Kitchen, 4.5 lb | Dog Chow Complete, 44 lb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 250 | $1.32 | $1.98 | $2.09 | $0.11 |
| 500 | $2.63 | $3.96 | $4.18 | $0.22 |
| 750 | $3.95 | $5.94 | $6.27 | $0.32 |
| 1,000 | $5.27 | $7.92 | $8.35 | $0.43 |
| 1,250 | $6.59 | $9.91 | $10.44 | $0.54 |
| 1,500 | $7.90 | $11.89 | $12.53 | $0.65 |
Our calculation from the October 29, 2026 Kroger prices above. Multiply by about 30.4 for a monthly figure.
Here's what that looks like for real dogs. A 30-pound dog fed at the top of the roll chart (about 630 kcal) costs roughly $3.30 a day on the 6-lb roll. Fed at a typical neutered-adult estimate (about 744 kcal), the same dog costs about $3.92 a day, or close to $119 a month. Move that dog to Fresh From the Kitchen and the estimate-based figure becomes about $6.22 a day. A 10-pound dog on the small bites runs about $2.59 a day at 326 kcal.
Freshpet's co-founder writes on the brand blog that "for most dogs, Freshpet typically costs about $2–$4 per day," with $1 to $2 for small dogs, $2 to $4 for medium dogs and $4 to $8 for large ones. Our numbers fit inside those ranges when you use the cheapest roll and the brand's own charts, and land at or above the top when you choose bagged recipes or feed a more active dog. The post doesn't say which recipes, store or dog weights it used, and it does say plainly: "Yes, Freshpet costs more per day than standard kibble."
Freshpet Delivery prices are harder to pin down. On October 29, 2026, its shredded chicken page showed "Starting at" with two figures, $2.08 and $1.04 a day, next to an offer of 50% off the first order and a "price per bag" of $12.00 without the bag weight. The FAQ says food "starts at around $2.00/day for small dogs who are exclusively fed our meals." We read the $1.04 as the first-order discount, but the page doesn't say so. Treat any intro price as a one-time number when you budget.
For scale, the 6-lb roll costs about 12 times as much per calorie as the 44-lb bag of Dog Chow at the same store, and Fresh From the Kitchen about 19 times as much. Tufts' Petfoodology team found something similar in 2022, when a cost comparison for a 55-pound dog showed daily costs ranging "from 55 cents to nearly $20 for the same amount of calories." Tufts describes its "fresh" group as foods generally bought by subscription, so the exact multiples may not match grocery-fridge food like Freshpet. The conclusion still applies: "There is a good quality diet available at nearly every price point for a healthy pet." If the budget is tight, our budget-friendly dog food guide shows how to compare cheaper foods without guessing.
The 7-day clock after you open a pack
Freshpet's FAQ is direct about it: rolls and the roasted, shredded and complete-meal bags should be used within 7 days of opening, and two Homestyle Creations recipes (Chicken & Turkey; Beef, Chicken & Turkey) within 5 days. Those limits exist because the food has no added preservatives. In the company's words, "we rely exclusively on maintaining the cold chain to preserve the products." The catch is that pack sizes are fixed and dogs aren't, so a pack that's a bargain for a big dog can turn into waste for a small one.
The bars below show how many days it takes to finish a single 6-lb Tender Chicken roll at the AAHA neutered-adult estimate. The dark line marks day 7.
10-lb dog (about 326 kcal a day)
20-lb dog (about 549 kcal a day)
30-lb dog (about 744 kcal a day)
50-lb dog (about 1,091 kcal a day)
Scale: full bar = 16 days. Our calculation: 3,794 kcal per 6-lb roll ÷ daily kcal.
A single 6-lb roll only clears the 7-day line if your dog eats at least about 542 kcal a day. For the 4.5-lb Fresh From the Kitchen bag the threshold is about 496 kcal, and for the 2-lb small bites about 252 kcal. Below those numbers, you'll either throw some away or need a plan. A 10-pound dog eating 326 kcal a day gets through only about 60% of a 6-lb roll in a week. Fed by the lower chart amount, it's closer to 44%.
There are three practical ways around it. First, buy the size your dog finishes in a week, even if the per-calorie price is higher. For a 10-pound dog, a 1-lb roll lasts about two days and a 1.5-lb roll about three, which means more trips but no waste. Second, if you want the 6-lb price, look for the box of four 1.5-lb rolls, which Freshpet sells under the same 6-lb size. Only one roll is open at a time. Third, freeze part of the pack on the day you open it.
Freezing comes with a wrinkle. Freshpet's general product text and FAQ say the food "can be frozen for future use," though "consistency may vary after thawing," and the company's feeding and storage guide says to "freeze promptly after opening." Yet the Tender Chicken roll's own FAQ says to "avoid freezing for best results." We read that as a texture warning rather than a safety one. If you freeze, slice the roll into daily portions first, wrap them tightly and thaw them in the fridge overnight. The storage guide says not to thaw on the counter or in the microwave. Freshpet Delivery's page adds that its bags can be frozen for up to six months and are best used within a month of freezing.
Handling rules worth taping to the fridge
- Keep it at 40°F or below. The AVMA and FDA give the same number for leftover moist pet food.
- Write the opening date on the pack with a marker. Seven days is easy to lose track of.
- Pick up the bowl after an hour. Freshpet's guide says to discard uneaten food after that point, which matters for grazers.
- If a pack was left out overnight, Freshpet says "the safest choice is to discard it."
- Throw it out if it smells sour, feels slimy, or shows discoloration or mold. The brand's own rule is "When in doubt, throw it out."
- Unopened packs keep until the sell-by date printed on them. The company doesn't give a shelf life in days.
- Wash bowls and scoops with hot, soapy water. Both the FDA and AVMA recommend it for moist pet food.
One more practical point: travel and power outages. A dog that eats Freshpet needs a cooler on road trips, and a long power cut can spoil the week's food. If your household doesn't have spare fridge space or your dog boards often, those are real costs that don't show up on a price tag.
Marketing claims next to what they mean
Freshpet's packaging and site use a lot of appealing language. Some of it is regulated, some isn't, and some is simply hard to check from outside. Here's how the main claims stack up against what we could verify.
Refrigerated, preservative-free
True in the sense that no preservatives are added; the FAQ says the products contain none. The trade-off is the short open window and total dependence on refrigeration. Tufts notes that for dry foods, preservatives are "an absolute must," which is a different situation from a refrigerated product.
All-natural ingredients
AAFCO defines "natural" as derived solely from plant, animal or mined sources, without chemically synthetic processing, and expects a disclaimer when synthetic vitamins and minerals are added. Freshpet's FAQ makes that exception itself: natural "with the exception of our vitamins and minerals." AAFCO also notes that the FDA hasn't defined "natural" for pet food.
Steam-cooked at lower temperatures
Freshpet says the food is fully cooked, not raw, and steam-cooked at lower temperatures than kibble. It doesn't publish the temperature. That's a meaningful difference from raw diets, which carry their own bacterial risks; our raw feeding guide covers those.
Proven to support healthy digestion
This appears on several product pages without a study cited next to it. We couldn't find what it's based on, so we can't tell you how strong the evidence is.
You'll see noticeable differences in your pet when switching to fresh
That's a promise about your experience, not a measured outcome. Tufts' 2022 cost article found "minimal scientific data to suggest a benefit" of one diet type over others and warned about a "marketing placebo effect."
Third party tested for contaminants
The Homestyle Creations page says all its recipes are tested for heavy metals, pesticides, BPA and acrylamide. The results aren't posted on the page, so this is a claim we can report but not evaluate.
Two words you might expect aren't doing much work here. "Fresh" has no definition on the AAFCO consumer pages we read, so it describes a style of product rather than a regulated standard. "Human-grade," which AAFCO calls a marketing term with specific guidelines, isn't a claim Freshpet clearly makes on the pages we checked. The company does say its animal proteins come from USDA-inspected suppliers.
Recalls and quality claims
Freshpet's own "Our Commitment to You" page says a small batch of Fresh From the Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken was voluntarily recalled in June 2022, with "no reported incidents of illness or death," and that the recall has since been terminated by the FDA. We tried to open the FDA notice and couldn't, so we can't confirm the lot details or the reason from a primary source. The FDA's recalls and withdrawals table covering June 8 to October 21, 2026 had no Freshpet entry when we checked it. We didn't search earlier years of that table.
On the same page, Freshpet says every meal goes through more than 20 quality and safety tests before it leaves the kitchen, that recipes are analyzed for pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms every hour and that its kitchens hold Safe Quality Food (SQF) certification. These are the company's statements, not independent audits we reviewed. A single recall of a small batch is not unusual in pet food, and a clean recall list isn't a guarantee either. The useful habit is to check a current list before you stock up. We keep one updated at dog food recalls this month.
Reading Freshpet reviews online
Search for Freshpet reviews and you'll mostly find Reddit threads, review blogs and the brand's own reviews page. Freshpet's page shows a long run of customer testimonials, roughly 50 of them, with no star average, no total and no note about how they were collected or whether anyone was paid or given product. Many describe changes in itching, weight or energy. They may be honest stories, but a curated page of happy owners can't tell you how often the food doesn't work out.
Reddit threads rank near the top for this search too. We didn't analyze them systematically, so we won't summarize them as if we had. When you read them, the practical reports are the useful part: how a dog handled the switch, how the food held up in the fridge, whether local stores keep it in stock and what it cost for a dog of a given size. Treat those as things to watch for, not as data. One dog's improvement after switching could come from more calories, fewer treats, a new routine or the old food not suiting that dog, and none of that tells you whether the same thing will happen to yours.
A two-week check you can run at home
If you try Freshpet, you can collect better evidence for your own dog than any review offers:
- Weigh your dog on day 1 and again on day 14, on the same scale.
- Switch gradually over several days, mixing increasing amounts of the new food with the old.
- Keep a short daily note on appetite and stool. Stool firmness often changes when moisture and fat go up.
- Write the open date on each pack and track how much you throw away.
- At the end, add up what you spent, divide by 14 and compare it with what the old food cost per day.
If your dog does well, eats with gusto and the cost and fridge space are fine for your household, that's a solid reason to stay. If the stools are loose, the weight creeps up or the waste is piling up, that's a solid reason to stop, whatever the reviews say.
Who Freshpet suits and who should skip it
Reasonable fit
- Small and medium adult dogs, where the daily cost stays in a range you're comfortable with
- Picky eaters who refuse kibble, if your vet has ruled out a medical reason for the low appetite
- Owners who want a cooked, refrigerated food without signing up for a subscription
- Households with fridge space and a dog that finishes a pack inside the open window
- Owners who'd use a small amount as a topper on a complete dry food
Think twice
- Large dogs on a tight budget, where full Freshpet feeding can run several dollars a day
- Large-breed puppies, unless the recipe says it covers growth of large-size dogs
- Dogs with pancreatitis or a fat limit from the vet, given the high fat per calorie
- Very small dogs with large packs, unless you'll freeze portions
- Dogs that travel or board often, or homes without reliable refrigeration
If your dog already does well on a complete dry or canned food, you don't need to switch for health reasons. Food for older dogs is a slightly different conversation, because appetite, chewing and muscle can change with age; our guide to food for older dogs covers that, and a soft, tasty food like Freshpet can be one option among several. For dogs with digestive trouble, a recipe change of any kind should come after a conversation with your vet; our wet food for sensitive stomachs article explains what vets usually look at first.
Using Freshpet as a topper instead of a full diet
Many owners end up using Freshpet the way the Healthy Mixers line is designed to be used: a spoonful on top of a complete dry food. It's a sensible compromise, provided you count the calories. A common rule for treats is to keep them to about 10% of daily calories, and Tufts uses that number in its treat guidance. Applying the same limit to a topper keeps the base food doing the nutritional heavy lifting.
For a 50-pound neutered adult needing about 1,091 kcal a day, 10% is about 109 kcal. That's about 78 grams of the Tender Chicken roll, a slice roughly a sixth of a pound, at a cost of about 57 cents a day at the Kroger price we found. The remaining 90% from a dry food like Dog Chow Complete would add about 43 cents, putting the whole day near $1.00. For a 30-pound dog, the same approach costs about 68 cents a day in total, and for a 10-pound dog about 30 cents.
Two cautions. Reduce the dry food by the same calories, or the topper becomes the reason your dog gains weight. And a 1-lb roll used as a topper for a small dog will still hit the 7-day limit long before it runs out, so slice and freeze portions on day one. Our dog food toppers guide compares other ways to make dry food more appealing.
Freshpet FAQ
Is Freshpet raw dog food?
No. Freshpet says its recipes are fully cooked to temperatures that eliminate harmful pathogens and are then refrigerated. That puts it in a different category from raw diets.

Most recipes are, but for different life stages. Read the AAFCO statement on the pack. Healthy Mixers is labeled for intermittent or supplemental feeding only.
How long does Freshpet last once opened?
Seven days for rolls and most bags, and five days for two Homestyle Creations recipes, according to Freshpet's FAQ. Food left in the bowl should be picked up after about an hour.
Can I freeze Freshpet?
Freshpet's FAQ and storage guide say yes, with possible changes in color and texture after thawing. The Tender Chicken roll's own FAQ advises avoiding freezing for best results. Thaw in the fridge, not on the counter.

Is Freshpet good for puppies?
Only the recipes labeled for growth. For puppies that will weigh 70 pounds or more as adults, the label should also say it includes growth of large-size dogs.
